A fixed hour, usually carrying marks, and the single element of the week that will not rearrange itself around your roster. For anyone on rotating shifts that single hour does more scheduling damage than the assignments around it, because everything else can shift and this cannot.
The mitigation is built into the model and a surprising number of students never use it. Missing a seminar normally means completing an alternative assignment instead, which takes longer than attending would have but preserves the credit. The mistake is not missing the session; it is missing it and doing nothing, which turns an inconvenience into a zero.
Ten weeks changes what you can defer
A ten-week term is more forgiving than an eight-week one and considerably less forgiving than a semester. There is room for one bad week and no room for two, which puts it in an awkward middle where students plan as though there is slack and discover in week seven that there was not.
The way to use the extra fortnight is on the large piece rather than on rest. Start whatever is due in week nine during weeks three and four, when the weekly load is at its lightest, and the back half stops being a negotiation with your own calendar.
- Weeks one and two: unit work plus the first seminar, and the planning hour that repays itself
- Weeks three and four: the lightest stretch of the term, and the only spare capacity in it
- Week five: the first substantial assessment in most courses
- Weeks six and seven: the weekly demand climbs and the seminars arrive on schedule regardless

A missed week is two separate problems
Academically you lose the graded items in it. Separately from any mark, a stretch of silence inside the course can trip an enrolment flag, and that trips faster than a grade ever moves.
Which makes the right response to a collapsed week a small visible action inside the course, plus a message sent while the week is still running. The same words sent after the deadline has gone are a different conversation entirely, and a worse one.

The seminar clashes with my shift. What are my options?
Most courses publish an alternative task that carries the same credit and costs more time than turning up would have. Find it in the syllabus before term rather than on the evening it clashes, and diarise it like the seminar itself. What turns a clash into a zero is doing nothing about it, not the clash.
How long is a Purdue Global term?
Ten weeks in the standard model, which sits between a compressed eight-week session and a full semester. That length allows one bad week and not two, so it rewards moving the large assessment forward into weeks three and four while the weekly load is still light rather than treating those weeks as a rest.
Is the competency route faster?
It is faster for people who already know the material and slower for people who do not, because progress comes from demonstrating existing knowledge rather than from working at speed. Does a quiet week cost me anything beyond marks?
It can, and the second consequence moves faster than the first. Silence inside a course is visible administratively as well as academically, and enrolment status is tied to activity rather than to grades. Doing one small thing inside the course during a difficult week is usually enough to prevent that entirely.
